Lavan: "The founders of BMF moved from the UK to Jaffna, to give back to a place their parents fled away from"

“I am cycling from Land’s End to John o’Groats, which is the furthest south western point of the UK to the furthest north eastern part. In total I should be covering around 950 miles or so. To add to my motivation on completing this epic journey I am raising money for a charity called Blue Magpie Foundation. They are a great charity that help some of the most disadvantaged people in Sri Lanka become self-sufficient and financially independent. If you would like to donate please follow the instructions further below.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Lavan Uthamakunan raised an amazing £2025 during this epic challenge. Thanks again Lavan!

Results of the 2021 Walking Campaign

Many of our team members have personal, first-hand experience of how education helped to lift them up above the gruelling life circumstances and achieve their dreams.

That is why the long-term vision of Blue Magpie Foundation is to create educational centres around the UK, a safe space where young people can unlock their full potential. We’ve done it in Sri Lanka, and we want to replicate the same model in other countries around the world, where BMF has a foothold and local connections.

In the 2021 Walking Campaign, our team of 4 have done 10K steps for 100 days, which helped to raise a total of £2203. Below is the breakdown of how the funds were used. Should that campaign not be as successful and supported, hundreds of children from underprivileged families would have missed out on chances to get a better education and life skills.

2021 campaign results:

£2k raised, after fees £1.7k + gift aid £492 = £2203

1) Covid help: provided basic necessities to 83 families in the northern part of Sri Lanka, Madduvil (£917)

2) Kavipriya house electricity (£227) – see the separate post about it – follow #BMFImpact

3) Classes from May 2022 to Sept 2023 (£818) – English and Scholarship lessons for 50 children in Madduvil, Northern Sri Lanka

4) Donation to Ummah Welfare Bangladesh for Rohingya children in June 2023 (£162). Rohingya are a stateless Indo-Aryan ethnic group from Myanmar, who fled to Bangladesh due to restrictions on their freedom of movement, access to state education and jobs.

Total spent £2175

Together we can help more children realise their dreams!
